Benzie County VINE Coverage
MI-VINE is Michigan's free, confidential, around-the-clock Victim Information and Notification Everyday service. It serves victims, families, and the public. Participating agencies send custody and criminal-case events that can support a one-person status check or trigger a notice. Michigan materials describe coverage for the Michigan Department of Corrections and participating county jails. They do not specifically confirm that Benzie County Jail currently supplies records. A live Michigan search or a call to 800-770-7657 is the right way to test county coverage before relying on it.
The agency boundary matters. An MDOC record can represent a state prisoner, parolee, or person under felony probation. A county record, if available, concerns the participating jail's custody. Neither source proves what another custodian is doing. Benzie County Jail has no verified public roster or recent-release feed, so MI-VINE can be a useful supplement but cannot replace the Sheriff status line or a focused request through the Sheriff FOIA process. A missing result may reflect spelling, nonparticipation, transfer, protected data, record aging, or upload delay. It does not prove release.

A released result can use an agency-supplied out-of-custody or release label. Do not treat a bare name disappearance as the same event. If the match points to Benzie County Jail and the date or reason is missing, call 231-882-4484. A durable county record comes from the Sheriff release form or equivalent booking-and-release entry. Important: “Release” must be read by agency. A transfer out of Benzie custody can mean the person entered MDOC, another county, federal, or immigration custody.

The live screen is useful for learning the labels, but each displayed event still needs to be tied to the correct person and reporting agency.
For an MDOC person, compare VINE with the Offender Tracking Information System. OTIS may show current MDOC status, Date Paroled, Earliest Release Date, Maximum Discharge Date, sentence information, and an offender photograph. It excludes people sentenced only to a county jail. A future Earliest Release Date is only the first parole-jurisdiction point, not proof that release happened.
Note: A VINE event is notice from its source, while a Sheriff release form or MDOC discharge record supplies more durable proof.
Benzie County VINE Release Alerts
After choosing the correct record, select its registration or notification option. Available events and delivery methods depend on the source. Official Michigan materials list phone, email, text, app, and TTY service. Registration is also available by phone at 800-770-7657, with TTY service at 866-847-1298. Calls can arrive at night, so a direct number works better than a switchboard.

The PIN confirms that the automated call was received and stops repeat calls. Email and text alerts do not use a PIN and send one message for the status change. An unanswered telephone call may leave a message and continue until the PIN is entered or for up to 72 hours. Registering more than one number or address can reduce the risk of a missed alert. A representative can reset a forgotten PIN or cancel a registration.
Direct victims who need fuller MDOC notices about parole eligibility, hearings, and decisions use MDOC Crime Victim Services at 877-886-5401. That program is separate from general MI-VINE release notification.
Benzie Transfers and RegistrationLink
Michigan's RegistrationLink was designed to connect registrations when a person moves from a county jail to another jail or to state prison. That feature is especially relevant in Benzie County, where no official public jail roster or recent-release feed was found. A person who leaves the local jail may have returned to the community, but the same disappearance could reflect a transfer. Linked notification can reduce the chance that an existing registration ends at the county boundary.
The event label still controls the meaning. Release, transfer, escape, bond, and court discharge are not interchangeable. A transfer to MDOC ends Benzie County Jail custody but begins or continues state custody. If the notice names a new facility or agency, follow that custodian's record. Benzie County VINE and OTIS
MI-VINE and OTIS can describe the same MDOC person for different purposes. VINE is built around custody information and event notification. OTIS is the state's public offender profile system for prisoners, parolees, felony probationers, and people still within three years after supervision discharge. When both systems return a match, compare the MDOC number and agency details before combining their information. VINE's latest event may prompt the inquiry, while OTIS can supply the current MDOC status and state date labels.
Michigan uses precise terms. “Date Paroled” can confirm that a person moved from secure state confinement to parole supervision. “Earliest Release Date” marks the point when the minimum term has been served and the Parole Board gains jurisdiction. It is not a promised exit date. “Maximum Discharge Date” concerns the sentence end if parole does not occur sooner. A parole status means the person is in the community under MDOC supervision, while discharge means that MDOC term or supervision ended.

OTIS cannot resolve an ordinary Benzie County Jail release when the person was never sentenced into MDOC jurisdiction. The Sheriff and court remain the local record chain. A VINE county event, if present, can add timely notice, but the release entry supplies the exact local disposition. This division prevents a state profile from being used as proof about a jail-only case it was never designed to cover.

Benzie County VINE Check Limits
MI-VINE is not a federal inmate locator. For a federal case, use the Bureau of Prisons locator after the person enters BOP custody. A BOP “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” result ends only the BOP part of the inquiry and does not rule out another custody system or supervision. ICE has its own Online Detainee Locator System for current detainees and certain people recently released from ICE custody. U.S. Marshals pretrial custody has no comparable public released-person search.
VINE is also not a lasting archive. It carries agency-supplied status and event notices, and Michigan does not promise how long a released county result remains public. Upload lag can delay a change. A no-result can have many causes. For Benzie County Jail, call the jail, check the right court, and request the release entry when exact proof is needed. For an MDOC record, compare OTIS status and Date Paroled, then seek an MDOC release or discharge record if a durable document is required.
